Online il progetto realizzato dagli artisti Payal Arya e Alexander Dimitrios Papadopoulos per la prima edizione del progetto di residenza artistica online Vacant Zone, dal titolo:
Engulfed with noise, the machine hallucinates, remembering the heat of the burning city.

Il progetto di Payal Arya e Alexander Dimitrios Papadopoulos realizzato per la prima edizione della residenza artistica online Vacant Zone, combina la componente tecnologica e umana attraverso il ricorso al video.
Questa idea li ha portati verso una “vacant zone”, una riva, un luogo dove i dati durano il tempo di un bit prima di sparire in un’esistenza indeterminata, insieme veloce, poetica e caotica.
Dopo una fase di dialogo e di ricerca comune, i due artisti in residenza, in collaborazione con un team tecnico, hanno sviluppato un algoritmo originale in grado di selezionare differenti materiali multimediali da un database in costante aggiornamento (costituito da immagini video, fotografie, audio) e di avviare un processo di composizione di questi materiali, allo stesso modo di come avviene nell’editing e nella post-produzione. A partire da alcune variabili, operando con una componente di parziale casualità e imprevedibilità, l’algoritmo interviene sui materiali di partenza combinandoli e applicando alcuni effetti – tra cui sovrapposizioni, accelerazioni e rallentamenti. Il risultato che ne deriva è un equilibro tra l’intenzione artistica e l’autonomia del server che processa ed esegue l’algoritmo. Ad ogni apertura del sito web o a ogni click sul pulsante “generate”, il server infatti produce un nuovo video, differente da ogni altro seppur generato a partire dagli stessi elementi.
Nell’estrema variabilità dei video prodotti rimane una costante, un voice over che racconta una storia, o meglio una visione, la cui sostanza è racchiusa nel titolo generale del progetto: Engulfed with noise, the machine hallucinates, remembering the heat of the burning city.
È precisamente da alcune di queste parole che gli artisti hanno proceduto a selezionare i materiali da includere nel database – un vero e proprio archivio, che sarà progressivamente aggiornato nel tempo.
L’algoritmo è stato ispirato dall’idea di una marea continua: così se proviamo a immaginarcelo come un diagramma, la forma conseguente sarebbe di tipo ondulato, come un’alternanza di onde.
L’esperienza stessa del pubblico che osserva i video e che ne può fare generarne di nuovi dal server non intende essere solo tecnica; la tecnologia in questo caso risulta anche strumentale a una vera e propria esperienza fatta di sensazioni, emozioni, suggestioni.
Vacant Zone è un progetto di residenza artistica online, ideato a novembre 2019.
Uno spazio virtuale senza limiti precisi, in attesa di essere abitato e prendere forma; un mondo potenziale che ogni volta diventa qualcosa di diverso.
Durante un periodo di residenza due artisti partecipanti – selezionati tramite open call – condividono l’esperienza della Vacant Zone: stando in essa, dialogando, pensando e infine, supportati a livello tecnico da un team specializzato in ambito informatico, realizzando un progetto finale, che sarà la struttura e l’apparenza che la stessa Vacant Zone prenderà da quel momento, fino all’inizio della residenza successiva.
Vacant Zone non ha significati predeterminati, è insieme globale e locale, immateriale e concreta, attuale e storica; si pone quale processo: pura possibilità soggettiva di costruzione, da aprire alla condivisione.
L’idea nasce all’interno di una riflessione sulla vitalità e importanza del fenomeno delle residenze artistiche nello scenario dell’arte contemporanea; ad oggi sono molto pochi i progetti che hanno sperimentato la virtualità dello spazio e le potenzialità delle tecnologie web, in questo caso il fine è quello di creare confronti e relazioni tra artisti di varia provenienza e cultura.
Payal Arya (Pune, India, 1990) è laureata in Psicologia e Sociologia all’Università di Bombay.
Ha inoltre conseguito una diploma BFA presso la Rachana Sansad, Bombay e la laurea MFA presso la Shiv Nadar University, Delhi.
Attraverso la sua pratica artistica, crea spazi immersivi e affettivi che le persone abitano, confondendo i parametri di orientamento e i confini tra reale e immaginario. Le sue installazioni site-specific attivano i sensi visivi, olfattivi, fisici e viscerali.
La sua installazione ‘When No one is Looking’ è stata esposta al Kala Ghoda festival di Bombay nel 2013 e la sua mostra di laurea ‘At dusk the sky had turned Violet’, è stata esposta al Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi nel 2016. Ha fatto parte di diverse mostre collettive come ‘Stop Making Sense 3 e 4’ a Bombay nel 2013 e 2014, ‘Minute per Image’ a Tifa, Pune nel 2017, ‘Regimes of Truth’ al Gati Dance Forum, Delhi nel 2018, ‘Saavdhaan: The Regimes of Truth’ al Kalakar Theatre, Delhi nel 2018, ‘The Future is Here’ al Bajaj Bhavan, Mumbai nel 2019.
Ha fatto parte del workshop ‘Amplified Voice’ a Kochi nel 2018, un programma American Arts Incubator in collaborazione con la Biennale di Kochi. Ha fatto parte della residenza d’artista al LAMO (Ladakh Arts and Media Organization) nel luglio 2018.
È stata invitata alla FilmAkademie Baden Wurttemberg -Germania per il programma ICLA dove ha co – diretto, prodotto e fatto il production design per il film ‘PIPIO’, ha collaborato e creato un’esperienza VR e un’installazione interattiva come parte di ‘PIPIO. Residenza
Alexander Dimitrios Papadopoulos (alias Iskander) (Italia/Grecia, 1996) si è laureato in Nuove Tecnologie delle Arti presso il dipartimento di Arti Visive all’Accademia di Belle Arti di Venezia nel 2021. Iskander è uno pseudonimo che si muove nel mondo digitale e non. È il semplice risultato della scelta paterna del nome, Alexander, che in greco significa “Difensore dell’umanità”, ma leggendolo nella sua variante orientale.
Iskander è un simbolo di congiunzione, una commistione tra società occidentale e orientale: dai temi politici e sociali all’auto-esplorazione, dalla fotografia alla video installazione e alle performance. La sua ricerca all’interno di se stesso e di ciò che lo circonda, dal comune al sacro, e soprattutto la connessione con le sue origini, sono tutti temi dominanti delle sue opere.
Attraverso la sua pratica artistica ha avuto l’opportunità di esporre la sua prima mostra personale -yposkome- (I promise) allo showroom L’idea nel 2018 curata da Robert Philips. Successivamente ha partecipato come residente di Fabrica sotto la direzione artistica di Michelle Mallard e con il tutoraggio di Benetton e Oliviero Toscani, partecipando a numerosi workshop con Jonathan DeVilliers, Rejene DalBello, Anastasia Panayiotidou, Erik Kessel e altri. Successivamente ha partecipato al festival di Nantes di -NANTES UTOPIALES HACKATON, 2 & 3 novembre 2018> AsterIdea> BE HUMAN IN SPACE- in gruppo con Yazgi Demirbas e altri scrittori, architetti e altri interessati, il tutto sotto l’assistenza di Julien Cantegreil e il supporto di Didier Schmitt.
Attraverso numerose esperienze di inter-lavoro ha curato le pubblicazioni dei suoi lavori fotografici presenti nell’iniziativa dei Mille di Sgarbi, nelle mostre di -Aperitivo al Verde- e in alcuni articoli di C41 Magazine,Yoghurt Magazine e UBIF tra il 2018 e il 2021.
Recentemente i suoi lavori si concentrano su installazioni sonore come -A Message From Home – del 2019, attraverso l’esplorazione dell’immagine e della memoria attraverso l’apparato sonoro ed espositivo, includendo così opere estranee al loro contesto fisico e con una forma puramente sonora. Il suo ultimo lavoro risale all’inizio del 2021 con il suo primo cortometraggio – the black sun – accettato per la selezione SHORT FILM CORNER a Cannes.

The project of Payal Arya and Alexander Dimitrios Papadopoulos realized for the first edition of the online artistic residency Vacant Zone combines the technological and human components to create an associative experience of image and sound driven by a single algorithm.
This concept led them to a vacant zone, a seashore, a place where data rests for a bit before vanishing into the same neverending existence, within a fast, poetic, chaotic experience through a digital shell that contains a hybrid form of memory.
After a phase of dialogue and reciprocal research work the two artists in residence, in collaboration with a technical team, have developed an original code able to select different multimedia materials from a constantly updated database (consisting of video images, photographs, audio) and to start a process of composition of these materials, in the same way as in editing and post-production. Starting from some variables, operating with a component of partial randomness and unpredictability, the algorithm intervenes on the materials. The result is a balance between the artistic intention and the autonomy of the server that processes and executes the algorithm. At each opening of the website or each click on the “generate” button, the server produces a new video, different from any other even if generated from the same elements.
Despite the extreme variety of the produced videos, one constant remains, it is a voice-over telling a story, or rather a vision, whose substance is contained in the general title of the project Engulfed in white noise, the machine hallucinates, remembering the heat of the burning city.
It is precisely from a few words that the two artists proceeded to select the materials to be included in the database – a real archive, which will be progressively updated through time.
The algorithm was inspired by the original artistic idea of a continuous tide: so if we imagine it like a diagram, the consequent shape would be an undulating form, as if it was an alternation of waves.
The experience of the audience watching the videos and being able to generate new ones from the server is not meant to be only technical; technology in this case is also instrumental to a real experience made of sensations and emotions.
Vacant Zone is an online artist residency project, devised in November 2019.
A virtual space without precise limits, waiting to be inhabited or to take form; a potential world that becomes something different each time.
During a four months residency, two participants artists – chosen through an open call – share the vacant zone experience: being there, dialoguing, reflecting and in the end, supported at a technical level by a specialized team, realizing the form and the shape that the project will take from that moment until the next inhabitance.
Vacant Zone has no predetermined meanings, and it is both global and local, immaterial and concrete, current and historical; it is a process: pure subjective possibility to build and to share.
The idea was about as reflection on the vitality and importance of the phenomenon of artistic residencies in the contemporary art scene; to date very few projects have experienced the virtuality of space and the potential of web technologies, in this case the aim is to create dialogues and relationships between artists of various backgrounds and culture.
Payal Arya (Pune, India, 1990) graduated with a BA degree in Psychology and Sociology from Bombay University in 2014. She has received her BFA diploma from Rachana Sansad, Bombay in 2013 and MFA degree from Shiv Nadar University, Delhi in 2016.
Through her art practice, she creates immersive and affective spaces that people inhabit blurring the parameters of the room and boundaries between real and imaginary. The site-specific installations call to action the visual, olfactory, physical as well as visceral senses.
Her installation ‘When No one is Looking’ was shown at the Kala Ghoda festival in Bombay in 2013 and her master’s degree show ‘At dusk the sky had turned Violet’, was shown at the basement of the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, Delhi in 2016. She has been a part of several group shows such as ‘Stop Making Sense 3 and 4’ in Bombay in 2013 and 2014, ‘Minute per Image’ at Tifa, Pune in 2017, ‘Regimes of Truth’ at Gati Dance Forum, Delhi in 2018, ‘Saavdhaan: The Regimes of Truth’ at Kalakar Theatre, Delhi in 2018, ‘The Future is Here’ at Bajaj Bhavan, Mumbai in 2019.
She was part of the ‘Amplified Voice’ workshop at Kochi in 2018, an American Arts Incubator program in collaboration with the Kochi Biennale. She was part of the artist residency at LAMO (Ladakh Arts and Media Organization) in July, 2018.
She was invited to FilmAkademie Baden Wurttemberg -Germany for ICLA program where she co – directed, produced and did production design for the film ‘PIPIO’, collaborated and created a VR experience and an interactive installation as part of ‘PIPIO. ‘Shifting Studios’ residency at TIFA, Pune in 2019
Alexander Dimitrios Papadopoulos (alias Iskander) (Italy/Greece, 1996) graduated with a BA degree in New Technology of Arts in the department of Visual Arts from the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice in 2021. Iskander is an alias that moves itself through the digital and non-digital world. It’s the simple result of a father’s choice for a name, Alexander, that in Greek means “Defender of Mankind”, but reading it within his eastern variant.
Iskander is a symbol for conjunction, a mixture between western and eastern societies, from political and social themes to self-exploration, from photography to video installation and performances. His research within himself and his surroundings, from the common to the sacred, and especially the connection with his origins, are all dominant themes of his works.
Through his art practice he had the opportunity to exhibit his first solo exhibition -yposkome- (I promise) at L’idea showroom in 2018 curated by Robert Philips. Subsequently she participated as a resident of Fabrica under the artistic direction of Michelle Mallard and with the tutoring of Benetton and Oliviero Toscani, participating in numerous workshops with Jonathan DeVilliers, Rejene DalBello, Anastasia Panayiotidou, Erik Kessel and others. Later she participated in the Nantes festival of -NANTES UTOPIALES HACKATON, 2 & 3 November 2018> AsterIdea> BE HUMAN IN SPACE- in group with Yazgi Demirbas and other writers, architects and other interested, all under the assistance of Julien Cantegreil and the support of Didier Schmitt.
Through numerous inter-work experiences he has dealt with some publications of his photographic works present in the initiative of the Mille di Sgarbi, in the exhibitions of -Aperitivo al Verde- and in some articles of C41 Magazine,Yoghurt Magazine and UBIF between 2018 and 2021.
Recently his works focus on sound installations such as -A Message From Home- of 2019, through the exploration of image and memory through the sound and exhibition apparatus, thus including works estranged from their physical context and with a purely sound form. (blueshift, the fifth mood and journey to the center of the sun). His last work dates back to the beginning of 2021 with his first short film – the black sun – accepted for the selection SHORT FILM CORNER in Cannes.
